Uncommon

Uncommon is a specialty coffee brand and bar that needed to work as hard for wholesale buyers as it does for the people who walk in for a cup. They came to us for a brand that could hold both worlds together, and a digital and physical presence that could carry it, from the shelf and the shopfront to a Shopify store serving two very different kinds of customer.
Approach
Brand identity, e-commerce, packaging and interior were developed in parallel, around a single idea drawn from the coffee plant's roots.
The concept grew from the coffee plant itself, its roots, and the colour of the soil it grows in. We simplified the wide, intricate root structure into a set of design elements that run through the identity, where the roots stand for the community coffee depends on: just as roots need good soil to reach deep, the industry needs to be supportive and sustainable for its farmers to flourish. The system carries across a Shopify store handling B2C and B2B side by side, packaging and point-of-sale for the bar, and, as part of Instil Collective, the interior of the café itself.

Outcome

A single, coherent brand that reaches both the customer at the counter and the wholesale buyers. Packaging, POS, ecommerce and an interior that all speak the same language, a complete brand world, rooted in where the coffee actually comes from.
